****Update 4/2/07. This box was destroyed by vandals sometime over the winter. Rubaduc and Gizz were the first and perhaps only ones to stamp it. I still have the template, and will re-plant a new box sometime soon, perhaps this weekend, in a nearby area. ************

This is the first mailbox that I have planted. It is located along Walkerbrook Road on the New Milford/Washington border on Route 109.

Coming from Washington to New Milford the road will be on your left. From New Milford to Washington it will be just past the town border on the right.

This is a long dirt country road which criss crosses through both towns, and goes all the way to Roxbury. I grew up the hill from here, and use to play in the area constantly when I was little.

After turning onto the road park on the left at a small clearing, then enjoy a nice leisurely walk of about 2 1/2 miles round trip.

The brook will be on your left, and it will keep crossing back and forth.

After a while you will reach a wooden bridge, and the brook will cross underneath to the right.

If you want a shorter hike you can park near the bridge for a 1 1/2 mile round trip walk.

The brook will continue along your right. After a while it it will cross under the road through a very large pipe.
On your right will be another dirt road going up a fairly steep hill.

To the left as the water exits the pipe is a large shallow pool which is good for fishing, and swimming. Just beyond that will be an old chimney, and other remains of an old structure.

As you face the fireplace, turn around and you will see a large boulder in the brook. Across from it on this side of the brook is the old corner of the structure with a recent "addition" to it. Remove the top, and you will have found "Checkmate."

You can also cheat, and just drive to "Checkmate," but you will be missing out on a very relaxing stroll. I hope to plant other letterboxes near here in the future.
