The Uffington Whitehorse Letterbox:
Location: Charles Ward Reservation, Andover, MA, Essex County
Terrain – easy, winding through trees & hills.
Clues – Bring Compass, bug spray, stamp pad, pens
Stamp: Hand-carved.
This is the first of a series – “The White Horses of the West of England”.
This horse is carved into the chalk of the Berkshire Downs below Whitehorse Hill, a mile and a half south of the village of Uffington in England. It is cut on the shallow slope near the top and is seen best from a distance or above. This is the oldest of the white horses of England. It has a length of 365 feet and some lines are ten feet wide. The purpose of the carving of the horse is unknown but it has been on record as a carving of a horse since before medieval times. Until 1995 this horse had been dated as Iron age, it is now dated as Bronze age. For more information go to http://wiltshirewhitehorses.org.uk/uffington.html.
Letterbox Clues: At the parking lot get a map – or look at the one there. You will want to take Rachael’s Trail. Follow this trail up through the orchard. When you cross over the stonewall at the top of the orchard take a left and skirt the field as you go along the line of trees. Look for an evergreen between two birches, below the tree a stump, below the stump is a chunk o wood, below that you will find my first steed.
