~This series of letterboxes all had a former "life" They either started out as postal letterboxes (hence the name) or were a limited time only box that just wants to have a longer "life" 80)

There are NO ink pads or markers in any of the boxes. You may want to take a good variety of colors.

**NOTE: In placing these boxes I tried to follow the trail map, but the colors on the printed version and what I saw on the trees generally did not match up. The trails go the same places, but are blazed in different colors.

Here we go:

Find Your way to Hurd State Park and pull into the main entrance (by the wooden sign). This is located on Hurd Park Road. There is parking on the left as soon as you pull in and that is where you need to start your journey.

After parking, cross the road and head up the green trail. This trail heads back towards the main road that you came in on and curves gently to the left. A trail will come in from the right and there will be a x-county skiing sign here also. There was a wonderful little cairn on top of it the day that we planted. Continue to your left and go uphill. At the top of this hill, and before going down, look to your left and you will see a large fallen tree with a very pointy rock to the right. Go to the stump of the fallen tree and look in its roots for box #1 Harvest Time. This was part of the Tribute To Autumn PLB Ring I was in.

Go back to the trail and take an immediate right on the blues trail going uphill. Continue on, passing an "Eeyore" house (the house still stands, but is only a shadow of its former self) along the way on your right. When you have gone about 65 steps beyond this quaint house you should be standing next to a very large fallen tree. From this tree take a reading of 190 degrees and go 34 steps to a ~3 (more like 2 now) foot decaying stump to Box #2 Atlanta Braves. This box was part of a Major League Baseball PLB ring that I was in. They are not my team, but when my oldest son ( a sports fanatic) heard I was going to do a baseball stamp he said I HAD to do his team.

Continue on in the same direction that you were traveling. You will come to a big, open area with a LARGE Oak tree in front of you. Go across this open area at 240 degrees to find a blue (this trail is now blazed red) trail on your right going downhill. Go with it. Quickly notice another, larger "Eeyore" house (there was no sign of this as of 11/6/11) on your left about 130 feet away. Is he "up sizing"? Continue on and when the descent becomes steeper and you have a ~5 foot long, ~2 foot high, flat top rock on your right-Stop. From that rock go at 330 degrees (about 40 steps) to the stump (end) of a rotting tree. There you will find box #3 Fairy #1. She is part of the Sprite's Fairy PLB Ring that I was in.

Keep going downhill and soon you will cross over a small stream. When you reach the road, turn right and quickly take a left on the red trail there. Very soon you will come to a 5-way intersection. Take a left on yellow going uphill. We only noticed a couple of blazes on this whole trail, but there is one right at the beginning to let you know you are on the right path. When you come to a rocky ledge on the left-Stop. Take 17 steps at 50 degrees to the backside of a pointy rock. Look to the right and see a tree growing out of the rock. Look in its roots to find Box #4 Ninetales. This box was part of the Pokemon PLB Ring that I was in.

Continue going uphill. At the intersection go left. (As a side note, if you continue straight there is a wonderful little rock to eat a picnic lunch at here.) The trail seems to split in two and it doesn't matter which one you take as they both bring you to the same spot. The one to the right is a little more scenic. Continue on and a trail will come in from the left (more of a "T") Keep going until you see a low ledge off to your left. There will also be a ~3 1/2 foot stump (only a small part of this stump is still standing, but it is in the middle of a few small Mountain Laurel bushes) on the left. From this stump, walk straight back to the backside of the ledge and look underneath the overhang for Box #5 Carousel Horse. This box was originally placed at the Lebanon Country Fair 2005. The weather was so miserably hot that not many ventured out. The poor girl did not want to be stuck in the barn for the rest of her life.

To head back to your car, continue in the direction that you were heading. Pass a "funky island" , another low ledge that is much closer to the trail, walk over rocks and come to a "Y". There will be a Beech & Oak tree touching here with a red blaze on the Beech. Go left here and downhill. At the next intersection, go left again and follow it down to the park road. Once at the road, go right and walk along the road to where you parked your car.

We hope you have enjoyed the hike, the scenery and the boxes.

Flutterby & Evie~
