At one time, Oklahoma has more favorite sons and daughters in the NASA Astronaut program than any other state! This is the first in a series of letterboxes in their honor.

John Bennett Herrington was born in Wetumka, Oklahoma. He graduated from the University of Colorado and the US Naval Postgraduate School. He is a Commander, USN, RET and former NASA Astronaut.

Take state highway 48 south from Holdenville to Lake Holdenville. Just before reaching the lake (on your left) turn left on a gravel road that goes around the north end of the lake. You'll pass a road on your right to points 32,33 and 34. Cross a low water bridge and see the beautiful cattails on your left (depending on time of year). Turn right toward point 30 and park immediately by the power line right of way. Walk east on the right of way. About 20 turkey buzzards were watching us this day, keeping a sharp eye on our little letterboxing poodle!
You'll come to another road, turn right on the road, then left at the fork toward the lake, then left again and again... as the road starts to curve away from the lake, the last large cedar near the lake, against a much larger dead tree contains your prize. Between the two, hanging shoulder high on the lake side agains the cedar trunk, you'll find our Hughes County astronaut!
