Mt. Hollywood, Los Angeles, California
This box is most likely missing, and as of 2/4/09 I have STILL not had a chance to carve a new stamp and replace it.
Would you like to see the Hollywood Sign up close, from behind? Well, this isn't it. Check out the Mt. Lee letterbox for that. This hike takes you through dusty chaparral in the Hollywood Hills.
Enter Griffith Park by Fern Dell or the Greek Theatre and park wherever you like. If you want a shorter hike, park near Griffith Observatory (currently under construction until 2005). Make your way to the top of Mt. Hollywood, using any of the myriad trails.
At the top, stand in the fenced-in area with picnic tables, and enjoy views of the entire central L.A. area. To your North are the Verdugo mountains, with the San Gabriels towering behind them. You will also see a medium-sized antenna with a solar panel at the top. Walk toward this and then past it on a path going back down. When another path joins on the left, turn around and walk 45 single-step paces back toward the antenna. On your left you will see a pile of boulders in the brush. To the right of these is a solitary boulder. Look underneath.
