Welcome to Newburgh, IN.
In 1803 Major John Sprinkle arrived by flatboat on the shores of what is now Newburgh. He set up a blacksmith shop overlooking the Ohio River. In 1810 he applied for a license to establish a ferry across the river to Kentucky.
In 1812, he travelled to Vincennes for 2 land grants for the new settlements - Sprinklesburg and one named Mount Prospect. In 1837, the 2 settlements were joined and named Newburgh. Newburgh's heyday was from 1860-1870 with much trade coming and going from her wharves.
In 1862, the town was raided and captured by confederate soldiers. Leaving some soldiers on the Kentucky shore to make their troops appear larger than they really were, the confederates captured Newburgh without one shot being fired. This was the first known confederate raid north of the Mason-Dixon line.
In 1928, US Lock and Dam 47 was completed at a cost of $5,000,000. This was a "wing dam" and operated until being replace by the present Lock in 1965.
CLUES
Take Newburgh Rd (Hwy 662) into old Newburgh. At the main 4 corners turn south (towards the river) At the "T" turn right and park.
Walk along the river walkway east.
The last building on the left (at the point) was the Traction Station connecting Evansville and Rockport. (My father-in-law road the traction to school in the late 20's & 30's)
On your left is a garden established by the Master Gardeners of Warrick Co.
Continue walking until you get to the old US Lock 47 building. Cross the road and start climbing.
4 steps - this log house was built by early Warrick Co residents and moved to the river front. The garden beside it was established by the Newburgh Garden Club and is representative of a kitchen garden of the mid-1800's.
The gazebo on the left was an Eagle Scout project built in 1999.
31 steps - you could play some horse shoes
32 steps - you made it to the top. Sit and catch your breath while enjoying the view.
At the top of the steps turn left, then right, finding a knotty warty maple tree.
To the left of this tree is a garage with white doors.
To the north of these doors is a beech tree.
What you are looking for is on the north side of this tree.
I hope you have enjoyed a little visit to one of the oldest towns in IN and the mighty, muddy Ohio River. Along with a little history and some exercise you've added a stamp to your log book.
