This letterbox is placed in the northwest parcel of Lantern Acres Game Land, a couple miles southeast of Creswell. Go to the NC Wildlife Resources Commission site to find a road map of the area, as well as the dates of the various hunting seasons. Orange clothing is a good idea during parts of the year. The trail is grassy in portions, so your favorite tick precautions are also in order.

This is a hybrid that is cross-posted with coordinates on geocaching.com. The idea for the stamp comes from a caching project called the Delorme Challenge. Cachers are challenged to find a geocache on each page of a state atlas. If successful, they receive coordinates to a super secret cache, as well as bragging rights. Page 47 of the NC atlas had no caches until I got this one into the woods. It is my best stamp to date, although that’s not saying much. I hope you enjoy it anyway.

UPDATE 5-27-07: My original spot was foul with poison ivy. I moved it a bit further down the road to a cleaner, but marginally more vunerable spot. Please rehide carefully.

UPDATE 5-25-08: A new stamp is in place, but my container had bite marks in it and I wasn't carrying a replacement. More repairs to come.

THE CLUE:

From Creswell, follow the signs toward the state park. When you make the right turn onto Thirty Foot Canal Road, start to look for the trail head. It comes up quick. There are no signs, nor a separate parking area. Look for an orange gate that prohibits vehicles but encourages foot travel. Follow this trail to the WNW. After a quarter mile, you’ll see the land change from relatively open woods to a thickly overgrown field. After another eighth of a mile, you’ll see a canal approach from the left and turn to parallel the trail. The overgrowth ends and open woods restart soon after.

Now, notice that the trees on the left of the trail are straight. Go about 400 feet from the start of the canal to the first exception, a young pine with some curves in the trunk. From that tree, go sixty-six paces to a broken branch that hangs diagonally above the trail. From the branch, go fifty-two more paces to a snapped pine tree that should have Page Forty-Seven hidden at the base under some bark. Please send a log or PM and let me know how it goes.
