Ornette Coleman Comes Home
Music Box #8
This stamp was originally carved as a passenger on the famous Texas Tour Bus, but when the bus returned to the Ft. Worth area, Ornette generously gave us his seat to other passengers and decided to return to his roots at home in Ft. Worth. You can find him relaxing in the Botanic Gardens, playing his jazz sax harmolodics under the trees!
To find Ornette:
Enter the Botanic Gardens on Rock Spring Drive (main entrance). Just beyond the 20 mph speed limit sign, watch for an opening on the right beyond the next large planting of Azaleas, and park on the right side of the street (approximately opposite the No Parking sign on the left side of the street – don’t think of parking on that other side!). You should be sort of midway between two large ivy-covered trees. About 15 steps N from the curb, look for a marker indicating a Bald Cypress tree. Continuing N, take 44 steps toward a single tall tree, next to which is a Chinese Parasol tree (with a marker); behind the tall tree you’ll find a marker indicating a Chittamwood tree and a red arrow. You've found the right tree! Look at the base of the tall tree under rocks to find Ornette Coleman playing his sax. And what would be good listening for this search? Anything by Ornette (maybe his newest album?) or maybe something by his inspiration, Charlie Parker.
Please remember to rehide this letterbox completely. The groundskeepers here are relentless!
