The height of land, or Great Divide, is the division between watersheds. Water falling on one side of the divide travels in a direction different than that falling on the other side. In this case, the sign that is the landmark for this letterbox states that water falling south of the divide ultimateley ends up in the Gulf of Mexico via the Mississippi River. Water falling north of the divide travels through Lake Superior and the other Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean.

From Grand View take County Road D south about 5 miles to the large "Great Divide" sign. Instead of parking on the hill and the curve right at the sign consider parking in the small lot about 500 feet south of the sign.

The parking area is for the North Country National Scenic Trail. The trail is a 4,600 mile walkway between NY and ND. The parking area is also an access point for the Porcupine Lake Widerness Area on the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. It's a nice place to hike. The National Forest website with additional information is at http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/cnnf/rec/trailsntours/che_nct_gd.html

Stand at the center of the back of the Great Divide sign. On a bearing of 280 degrees, and 55 feet away is a low-lying rock. It is about 3 feet across. A maple tree is growing over the edge of the rock, forming a cavity between the tree and the rock. The letterbox is in this cavity and covered with a second rock.

Have Fun!
