This letterbox is located at the site of the oldest structure in Malheur County and eastern Oregon. It was built in 1872 and has been a way station on the Oregon Trail, a hostelry, a stage stop for the Boise to Burns run, and during the Bannock Paiute War in 1878, it served as a refuge for the nearby settlers.

Clues to reaching destination:
-If entering Vale from Ontario (Highway 20/26) go to Main St. and turn left. It is well marked at corner as a historic location. Go three blocks to Old Stone House.
-If entering Vale from Burns (Highway 20) go to Main St. and turn right. It is well marked at corner as a historic location. Go two blocks to Old Stone House.
-If entering Vale from John Day (Highway 26) turn right on Washington, go two blocks to Main St. and turn right. It is well marked at corner as a historic location. Go two blocks to Old Stone House.
Park in front of the Stone House. Go straight towards the door, turn left and walk until you get to brick path that runs along the south side of house. Follow the path towards the big tree in the back yard. The tree is surrounded by a circle of large rocks. There is old farm equipment around the base the tree. At the base of the tree by the plow, there is a big flat rock. Lift the rock to reveal the letter box, leave rock in place while stamping. Then return box to location under rock.

Easily accessible location - drive-by.
The box includes a hand-made stamp, journal and pencil. No inkpad provided, please bring your own.
Updates on box appreciated.
