Difficulty: Easy Drive Up
Time: 15 minutes. Distance ~ 50 yards round trip on flat ground.
Please bring your stamp, a stamp pad, compass, pen and an old rag to wipe off the box/your hands.
Find Pomeroy Ohio in the Southeastern portion of the state. You will be heading to the upstream end of the town on the river. Where main street make a large bend to the right you will find the Pomeroy Municipal Park. From here look around for the very tall brick smoke stack. Find the narrow road to the smoke stack and before reaching the stack turn off left and park. Walk to the west side of the stack (side opposite the road) and face westerly. Take a heading of ~ (approx.) 265* and go ~ 18-20 steps and you should be at a large square concrete block with rebar sticking out of the top. NOTE FROM GRANNY BUTTERFLY AND COFFEE MUG FOR REST OF CLUES: 3/29/11 update. Unobserved, go around to the back side of this structure and look beneath the cinder block for a small 3 x 2 inch Lock & Lock. PLEASE BE KIND AND SEAL THE BOX WELL. It was found scattered and the pouch, bags, and book destroyed. A new book has been put in it and there was no room in the small Lock & Lock for more than a stamp and logbook. No plastic bags so do take the time to seal its 4 seal. This one is well worth preserving as its an early Safari Man carving. ************************
You can return to your car to do the stamping and when done, please replace the box where and as found. Now why is this box up here when the destination cafe is 2 miles down river from the Municipal park. Because I spent 45 minutes driving around town and up on the cliff trying to find a good hiding spot.. with no luck. So head down river two miles, driving or walking the concrete sidewalk and look for the beautiful rearing horse on the riverside. Here is a cafe worth driving for and I challenge you to go inside, check it out and have a snack, meal or cool one over looking the beautiful Ohio River. If you have time, please drop me a line and tell me how you liked it and the hunt. Now before you call it a day and while your on this side of the state, why not head south 15 miles to Gallia County and Gallipolis where you will find several more boxes by some other talented letterboxers.
