Status: alive and well on November 13, 2016
From Parker, travel north on State Highway 95. Watch for the entrance on the right for Hill Crest Bay. Continue on Highway 95 for about 0.1 mile more and turn right on a dirt road (Planet Ranch Rd.). There is a brown “binocular” sign pointing the way. The dirt road is between mile markers 161 & 162 and is just south of the long highway bridge over the Bill Williams River. Park by the brown sign that says ”Entering Bill Williams River NWR”. The sign is by a yellow gate. (If the gate is open, you can drive closer to the box location!)
Walk or drive up the dirt road. The road will drop down into and cross a gully and go gradually up the other side curving gently to the left. The road will then start going down again. You will soon see on your right an old eroded dirt road going very steeply up the slope. It is blocked by two rusty square steel poles with a cable between them. Walk up this old road. It will soon make a turn to the right and then go into a very very shallow drainage depression at the far edge of the turn. From the bottom of the depression, continue up the road for about 36 steps. Look to your left and you will see two Cholla Cactus about 4 feet apart. They are about ten steps off the road and have a large rock between them. From between the two Cholla, go at about 20 degrees (from mag. north) for about 5 steps to a grey-green bush. The box is under the east side of the bush under a flat rock covered with some twiggy plant debris. Be alert for snakes.
Please be sure the contents are double ziplocked when you put them back in the box (i.e. the stamp is in a ziploc, the book is in a ziploc, and the two are in the larger ziploc bag), and put all of it INSIDE the box. Please rehide the box well under the rock and covered with some plant debris so that it can not be seen from any direction.
Enjoy the view of the Bill Williams River marshland. It is the home to a great variety of birds, some endangered.
