Black Hills Overlook - Nature Trail
(Nebraska Sate Park License Required)
Equipment Needed: pen, stamp, ink, logbook, NE State park license
Difficulty: Medium (trail is somewhat overgrown in areas)
Distance: roughly 2 miles round trip
Potential Hazards: rattlesnakes, poison ivy, spiders, ticks, cactus, steep inclines off trail
Watch out for poison ivy and rattlesnakes on this route! You might take a walkin' stick to give 'em a clout. Leave your car parked at "Pine Cone Butte”, then head north on the road, towards the loot. "Black Hills Overlook - Nature Trail” is where you should go, whatever you do, don’t continue on the road! Follow the trail north to where the fences cross, hang a left with the trail, or else you’ll get lost. Keep you’re eyes open for a white diamond on a tree take the path it shows... but DON’T head toward the east. Still heading westward, to another diamond on a post… the cattle cannot cross here, but that’s where you’ll want to go. Look northward and you’ll see them, they’re called the “kissing rocks”, as you pass by the old car remains, don’t let the wire grab your socks! You’re headed east now. Keep left and you’ll pass a “J” shaped tree. It’s branches reach toward Heaven. Look up, up, up. Do you see? Pass the concrete slabs (to your right)… northward again, here we go! If you’re tired, stop here and catch you’re breath… or you could just take it slow. Hike up, up, up the hill. The “kissing rocks” are off to the west. Walk through the "towering trees" on the path… don’t worry, there isn’t much left. Up, up, up the trail continues… look for the sign on the hill. Painted yellow, at the top of a post, it should be standing there still. You’re treasure is there, ‘neath some stones, under the sign. Please return in as you found it… nice and neat for others to find.
