4/21/2007 THIS BOX IS CURRENTLY MISSING. I will recarve it and replace it as soon as I can. I will update when it is back in action.

Interurban Trail Information: It’s not difficult to see why the Interurban Trail is one of the most popular trails in Bellingham. The variance in foliage, ecosystems, views and branching side trails have much to offer the day hiker or biker. The trailhead begins on the south side of town and snakes through the woods along the western slope of Chuckanut Mountain for roughly six miles.

The trail is well groomed and flat -- the remains of an old rail transit system with fine crushed gravel that can accommodate several hikers walking abreast. The Interurban Trail connects to all 3 parks in this series, and if you want to find all 3 boxes on foot or on bike, it should be about 4 miles round trip, give or take. You can also drive to all 3 parks and follow the clues individually.

Directions to Fairhaven Park: From 1-5, take the Fairhaven Exit (Exit 250) and go west. Follow Fairhaven Parkway about a mile and half and turn left on Chuckanut Drive. The entrance to the park is about 1/4 mile ahead on the left.

Clues: Park at the entrance parking lot (just on your right as you enter the park) and head out. Pass between the playground and the restrooms and head toward the fence. At the fence, turn right and follow the path. Pass the tennis courts (keeping them on your right) and follow the gravel path downhill. Pass between two small rocks on either side of the trail and begin heading uphill. (Noteworthy is the salmon bridge in the creek on the left... the day we planted this letterbox the salmon were spawning and were trying to leap up the steps... way cool!)

At the top of the hill you reach a T in the trail. Turn right, away from the creek. Up ahead is a trailmarker. Arroyo Park (and thus, box #3) is only 1.5 miles ahead, but you want to go right toward Fairhaven Park and box #2. Go past a Y-shaped tree with a hole possibly created by a very precise woodpecker and begin watching for a picnic bench on your right. Stand on the cement circle underneath the picnic bench and look 30º. You will see two large trees with a gap between them. Go to the gap and look in the roots of the tree on your right. Your prize is well-hidden under layers of bark.

Warning: This is a high muggle area in nice weather. Please be very discreet and take the time to re-hide the box better than you found it. Thanks!
