I took over the 3 box series to keep it alive and active

Echo Mountain via the Sam Merrill Trail
Lake Ave and Loma Vista, parking can be tough to find on the weekends

This is very popular trail on the weekends, you will not be alone
on this climb to the top.

From 1894-1900 there was a beautiful resort on Echo Mountain above Pasadena/Altadena. It was called the Echo Mountain House, but was known as the White City because that’s what it looked like all lit up. There Professor Thaddeus S. C. Lowe's Mountain Railway and resort was Southern California's must-visit attraction, drawing more than three million visitors from1896 to 1936. Echo Mountain (3207') was the heart of the resort with its elegant Echo Mountain House hotel, chalet, observatory, and small zoo. Unfortunately, a defective kitchen flue started a fire in the early hours of February 5, 1900, and the Echo Mountain House burned to the ground.

HUMMINGBIRD (replaced 11/30/08) Missing? I looked and looked and
could not locate the box, I removed all the small rocks but still nothing.
HELP: If someone will please carve or get a store bought hummingbird stamp and replace this box. If not I will replace it once I go back up. The hiding spot is good enough for a 5x5 inch box, stamp only no book required.

clue: From the 1 Mile Marker, walk 100 steps to the sharp turn with the railroad ties retaining wall. The box is behind the fourth panel of the retaining wall, under some rocks and beautiful flowers.

REMEMBER (updated 08MAY16)
HELP! This big 5x8 inch big box needs to be replaced

clue: Continue the rest of the way to the top (1.7 more miles). At the fork, go right toward Echo Mountain. Continue on the main trail towards the hotel ruins. Go down and notice the thigh-high wall to the left of the FIREPLACE. This wall connects to a rough stone wall just outside the fireplace "room". The box is hidden at the left base of this wall behind some rocks. This box is located on the main trail between the 6 wheel railroad remains and the giant steel wheel, on the oceanside.

CHANDELIER (updated 08MAY16) This stamp has seen better days.
HELP! box needs to be replaced 3x3 inch or bigger

Continue along the trail to the Echo Mountain House site and ascend the double staircase. This is where all the muggles hang out and admire the views. At the top of the stairs you will see the foundation of the old hotel. Walk to the Echo Mountain House interpretive sign. Ahead and to your right, you will see the Echo Phone. Yell! Hear your ECHO ECHO ECHO!

clue: Turn around and follow the trail to your left, past the agave plants. You will see the trail go down to your left, to the Chalet interpretive sign. Read it! Then look to you left about 6 feet towards the mountains. The box is under some rocks on the right side under the small tree bush.

Hike length: 3-5 miles
