The Vermont quarter, the 4th quarter in the 2001 series, features Camel's Hump Mountain in the northern half of Vermont's Green Mountains. Camel's Hump is easily recognized by its unique double-humped profile. At 4,083 feet, Camel's Hump is Vermont's third highest mountain. Camel's Hump is one of the most heavily visited peaks in the Northeast. Each year 20,000 + people and hundreds of dogs hike to the summit. There are numerous paths to choose from in the Camel's Hump trail system, approachable from either North Duxbury or Huntington Center.

Directions: Choose your ascent- here are some suggestions-

Summit via Borrows Trail (2.4 miles) or Forest City Trail (3.9 miles)- Huntington Center

From Interstate 89, take exit 11 toward US2-Richmond/ VT 117 Bolton Turn right onto W Main Street Turn right onto Bridge Street Turn right onto Huntington Road From Huntington Center follow Huntington Road/Main Road to the Camel's Hump Road (approx 2.5 mi south of the post office in Huntington), turn left onto Camel's Hump Road Continue 2.8 miles east on the Camel's Hump Road to a road junction and the Forest City Trailhead. There is limited parking at the trailhead. To the left the road continues 0.7 miles to the beginning of the Borrows Trail and a larger parking lot. The Forest City-Burrows Connector joins these two trails.

Summit via Monroe Trail (3.4 miles)- North Duxbury

Take exit number 10 towards VT-100 / WATERBURY / US-2 / STOWE. Turn LEFT to get on VT-100 heading WEST. Keep LEFT to stay on VT-100. Turn RIGHT onto WINOOSKI STREET. Turn RIGHT onto RIVER ROAD, west. Turn LEFT onto CAMELS HUMP ROAD (5.1 miles). There are several side roads off the Hump Road so be sure to stay on the main road. At 6.5 mi. bear left at a fork and cross a bridge. At 8.6 miles, reach a large parking lot at the Couching Lion caretaker cabin. This is a very popular trailhead and parking space is at a premium on weekends.

Clues:

Hike to the summit. Descend the east side of the Camel's Hump summit cone via the Long Trail, 0.2 mi to the yellow-blazed Alpine Trail. Follow the Alpine trail to the path for the crashed plane. The path will be at a bearing of 260. Walk to the remains of the plane. Turn around retrace your steps to the Alpine Trail. Stop where the trail goes right. Then face 40 degrees and go 10 paces. The letterbox is hidden in front of you.

Notes:

A pace is taken to be the average distance a child will advance by moving one foot forward - approximately 21 inches.

The hike to the summit is quite challenging, please be cautious, especially if hiking with children.
