The unemployment rate soared to more than 25% during the Great Depression. An innovative program was initiated by Roosevelt called the Works Progress Administration to provide jobs to enhance and expand the national infrastructure. These jobs paid about $25 a month.
Mendota Work Camp #1 opened in January 1936 and continued into 1941, when the world war solved the unemployment problem.
Start yourt quest in the parking area of the Big Rivers Regional Trail parking lot. Head north on the paved trail to the Mendota Work Camp #1 informational sign. If you look above the sign in the direction of the river you will see a monolith above the trees. Follow the path to the left of the sign toward the monolith which really is the fireplace/chimney for the old recreation hall.
Turn around the fireplace until you are facing the hearth. On the lower left is an opening which was one source of draft for the fire. Carefully reach into this opening and locate the letterbox, which also includes a first finder reward!
