Sally O tells me that you need to wear boots as the trail is very muddy. 8-18-09

From the junction of routes 187 and 20 go north on 187 for about a mile. Turn left into the parking lot for the East Granby Recreation Area North Entrance.

After parking the car, head uphill to the map board telling you that this is a Brian Spears Eagle Trail, then go downhill on the wide mowed path, staying straight through a swampy area into another field, bearing right along the tree line and into the woods to pick up red blazes. Follow red the whole way. At the Y follow the red arrow uphill, pass through a stonewall, then look on the right for a chimney of a long ago cabin. There are signs of ATV's along here but soon the trail narrows and REALLY goes uphill. Eventually you'll come to a tree with a left arrow on it. Looking up the hill you should see a cell tower with a building next to it (Bell Lady just told me that it's not visible with summer foliage). Just to left (and in front of it) is a pretty neat rock overlooking the area. Two trees to the left of the rock, in left side of the roots is Rising Tall (formerly of McLean's Game refuge and relocated here). A great carving by Talking Turtle of the Alphabet Bandits.

For the bonus box (you may now ignore the clues in the log book) go back to the stonewall that you went through earlier and look left for a 4 or 5 foot section of a larger log near a hollow stump. Look in the end nearest the stump.
