NOTE: STATUS UNKNOWN AS OF 1/1/09 MAY BE MISSING BUT NOT SURE:
Hocking Hills State Park, Ash Cave

Difficulty: about a 1/2 mile round trip walk with a 90 foot rise to the top of the falls....wooden stairs. Then another pleasant hike on the blue blazed trail headed toward Trailtracker's HitchHiker Hostel. Wheel chair accessible to lower part of cave. Kid and pet friendly to lower part of cave. Keep a very close eye on kids if going to the top and near the rim of the cliffs. A fall from the top will be fatal. The Hocking Hills are a beautiful example of mother nature in her grandest with bold cliffs, natural falls and pools, beautiful trees and shrubs and lots of wild animals. Humans are even invited.
Time: ~ (approx.) 1 + Hr. walking (depending on your speed, as I am 60 + and not real fast) and stamping and maybe longer if you get other boxes in the close proximity. Please bring your stamp, a stamp pad, compass, pen and an old rag to wipe off the pouch/your hands.

Clues: make your way to the top of Ash cave and cross over the stream which supplies the falls and then head towards the right following the blue blazes. After passing a couple of wooden bridges you will come to a bridge made of a very large culvert pipe (about 3' diameter). This is pretty close to a strong wishbone type fork in the trail ahead, if your planning to go on to the H.H. Hostel. You can either keep going for the Hostel and get this one on the return, or head back the way you came from the culvert/bridge 98 steps to the twin fallen trees across the trail (they may become cut logs on both sides of the trail after the park service takes care of them). Follow the larger of the trees up to its roots and find "Cheers Two You" in the root section under a small rotten branch placed on top of it (Note: this is a remake of a lost box at the Rock house but is a new, changed, stamp and new log and new location so I classify it as a new letterbox) Please retrieve the pouch, unobserved, and move away from that location to do the stamping. When done stamping, please put the log in a baggie and seal it well and then put that baggie and the stamp in the other baggie and seal it well, then return those to the pouch and unobserved, replace it, as found and cover it with something. (Kind of a long sentence there, was it not?) And I certainly hope you have a fun time in this beautiful area and are able to spend time at the other attractions of the park also. There are letterboxes everywhere thanks to Trailtracker and others. Drop me a line with your results if you have time. I enjoy hearing about others adventures. Thanks, Safari Man P.S. This stamp depicts my idea of the end of a perfect day of letterboxing with a friend or friends.
