Update July 2007: I checked on the box while I was in the area for the 4th of July, sadly it is missing. I'll try to replace before Thanksgiving (it may be that long before I get over there again).
When my daughter and I lived on the Central Coast one of our favorite things to do was go look for sea otters. The place we could almost always count on to find them was near Morro Rock in Morro Bay.
One of the things we also found out about was a wonderful book based on the true story of a Sea Otter that was named Fokey who was under the watch of the Marine Biologists from Monterey Bay. It is a wonderful story for children and adults and I really recommed you check it out from your library or buy it. It is called Fokey the Sea Otter.
Anyway, on to the box.
Make your way to Morro Bay and get down to the Embarcadero and make your way towards Morro Rock. As you are approaching the rock and it is right in front of you, there is the parking lot for the state beach on your right hand side (and the public restrooms) and a dirt turn off/lot on your left hand side. Turn off to your left and park you car here facing the water for a good view of the bay.
In the middle of this dirt lot there is a circular patch of ice plant. In the middle of the ice plant there are some taller bushes that stick up from the ice plant. The letterbox is is in one of these bushes with a rock on top of it.
This spot is where you can almost always see Sea Otters swimming around or wrapped in kelp.
Happy Hunting!
