Location: A county park located west of Pella. From Pella, take Highway D west to N. Branch Road. On Branch Road, take the second road to the left to enter the park. There will be signs on the roads identifying the park. Follow the road all the way to the end and park in the lot.
Time: ~30 minutes roundtrip
Terrain: Somewhat rough rocky trail on an incline
This is a gem of a park. At first, the impression is unimposing. But walk in a bit and explore just a little and the view you get of the river is beautiful. The waters are clear and fast – moving. So I could easily imagine a fish living in this lovely environ, surrounded by the best habitat he or she could ever want…….
In the corner of the lot there is a trailhead, marked by a series of large boulders. Follow this trail as it winds uphill. Continue until you reach a large stump surrounded by 3 living trees. From the stump, take a bearing of 190 degrees. Proceed on this rough trail as it parallels the river. You’ll pass by a large fallen tree that points into the water. Keep going until you reach another large fallen tree that is hollow. It points uphill to a standing split tree. Behind this tree is a grouping of 5 smaller trees and some rocks. The fish is hidden between two of these rocks and is covered by a flat pink rock,
Please reseal, replace and rehide everything carefully so this box is available for future visitors. Since we don’t live in the area, status reports would be greatly appreciated!
You can retrace your steps or choose any other paths to explore the area and eventually return to your vehicle.
