This letterbox was created by third and fourth graders at Derby Elementary School in Derby Line,Vermnot. Letterboxing was an after school program. The children went out and found letterboxes in the area which amounted to 3! So..we decided to place more closer to home. The stamps which they created were taken from the Kids section on the letterboxing website. We made stamps using the corn cushions and the art gum erasers. The art gum stamps are the ones you will find in our letterboxes. The children did ALL of the carving! They were extremely proud of their work. So...here are your clues for this letterbox.
Take I-91 North to exit 28.
Turn right onto US Rt.5.
Continue on Rt. 5 until you come to a fork in the road.
The Cow Palace Restaurant will be in front of you. Turn left.
The Solder's Stone Monument is a short distance from the restaurant on your right.
You may park on the side of the road near the monument.
Walk up to the monument. Notice the year that is was built. This monument was the first one in the state and the country to honor Civil War soldiers. The granite was taken from a quarry right in the town of Derby. These men were all from the town of Derby. The youngest boy in this war was named Willie. He was a drummer boy. He was 15 years old. He received the congressional medal of honor. However, we don't know for what reason he received this medal.
With your back to the monument, walk towards the right hand corner on the park. There is a tree in that corner close to theelk fence. If you are lucky you may hear a bugle or two!
Bend down to find our treasure inside the tree.
