Sadako's Story

(NOTE: This box was moved slightly to avoid the flooding that this area is often prone to getting. The box survived two floods but I didn't want to take a chance on a third - 10/10/10).

To learn about Sadako and find this wonderful story, you must first do a little ciphering, but in addition to the stamp, there is a small reward for all your hard work.

The hike itself is rather short and easy, so I have to make you work a little. As I noted above, the stream in this area is really close to the Missouri River, so when the River at Rocheport is at flood stage or close, you may want to wait to try and retrieve this one when the water goes back down.

First solve this cryptogram:

L NLQQ NYLCO VOHZO SF MSXY NLFRW HFG MSX NLQQ BQM HQQ

SKOY CDO NSYQG -- WHGHIS WHWHIL

The start of this clue is further encrypted using a Key Word Shift Cipher. Here is a common explanation of how to solve the code.

A Key Word Shift Cipher uses, a key word, such as Frank. The key word secretly hides the solution to breaking the cipher text. Each letter of 'Frank' represents a number. It does so by each letter representing the order in which it appears in the alphabet. In the context of this word, 'F' appears second, 'R' fifth, 'A' first and so on. By finding the order in which the letters appear in the alphabet, you find a series of numbers. In this case, 'Frank' becomes 25143. Now that you have the number and the encrypted clue (cipher text) you're able to decode the clue. Do this by placing the number sequence over the code. Subtract the number from the letter by counting letters backwards. For instance if the code is HWBRN you'd go back two letters from H to get F. W goes back five places to find R. B moves back one to A and so on and so forth. Write the numbers out above the code skipping all spaces, but keeping the sequence of the numbers. Tricky, eh? This type of code is referred to as 'polyalphabetic' because the same letter in the cipher text could be several different letters in the plain text, that is, when it is decoded. Being polyalphabetic makes an encryption extremely difficult to crack.

Use both the first and last name of the author from the cryptogram (combined with no space) as your keyword and solve the following keyword cipher to find the starting location.

Park at the gate. Take trail past gate over a small bridge. GO on across a well-established trail and continue north following the sign directing you to a camping area. The trails takes a quick up and down and then you will come to a larger wooden bridge. Cross this bridge and go three short paces from the north end to a side trail on the left. Take this trail about 70 paces to a dilapidated shed on right. Continue down trail for 20 paces (some recent flooding has made it difficult to actually see the trail as it gets closer to the creek, so just keep walking down between the creek and bluff).
On your right you will see a pile of boulders sitting just left of a massive twin-trunked guardian. Standing in front of this guardian (opposite but facing the cliff face) look to your left. Just past this tree a few paces is a table-sized flat boulder that resembles a parallelogram. Look on the left side of the northernmost tip and you will find your prize. But before you uncover it, take note of the stones protecting its home and be sure to replace them in the same manner so they don't go sliding down the hill exposing this hidden gem to all the hunters in this area.
Keeping that in mind, use leaves to cover it well then cover it with ricks, so it cannot be seen from below. There is a bonus for all finders. When the stock runs low (below 10) please let me know so I may come and replenish it. In winter this spot can be seen from the main trail so be discreet and always follow proper rehideation.
