Scotty's LETTERBOX is a short walk from the parking lot, perhaps a mile round trip.

(This box has just been re-planted)

The San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary, in Irvine, is within blocks of the 405 freeway.
Exit South on Jamboree toward Newport Beach. Turn Left at the 1st signal, Michaelson. Continue on Michaelson to Riparian View. Turn Right on Riparian, past the Irvine Water District. Follow signs directing you to Audubon House and the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary. Turn Right down a short hill into a parking lot. The first house will be the Audubon House where you can get a map. These houses are historical. There are more than 11 miles of trails, so get a map before you start your trek. Look for a sign directing you to the Nature Trail. Follow the trail past the picnic tables and around the field.

To find Scotty's letterbox turn right onto the Fledgling Loop Trail. You will see a sign on the right that says Fledgling Loop Trail (0.5 mi). You will be walking between Pond 1 on your left, and the main grounds on your Right. Turn Right at the first opportunity. You will be walking between the main grounds and Pond B. Turn left at the intersection of Ponds B, E and Pond D. You will be walking between several of the small ponds. When you get to the corners of Pond A and Pond C you will find a sign that reads Fledgling Loop Trail, and across the path you will see another sign that reads Treehill Trail (0.8 mi).

On that corner of Pond C you will see a small tree (bush?) about 6 or 7 feet high, with many small trunks or branches. There are large boulders around it and all the way down to the water. If you look carefully you can see the Scotty's letterbox nestled down into the tree branches while you are standing on the road, It is clear plastic, and it is covered with brush, but if you know it is there, you will see it. It is a challenge to get to it. You must climb down onto the rocks and reach into the tree for Scotty's box. After you finish stamping, please replace the box as described here. Good luck, and happy hunting.
