This box is the companion to the SpaceShipOne letterbox placed nearby. While SpaceShipOne celebrates private enterprise in space, Columbia Lift-Off! is dedicated to the scientists, engineers, and astronauts of the United States space agency, NASA.
Columbia was the first fully operational space shuttle. Assembled in the late 1970s as part of a revolutionary new series of reusable space craft, Columbia flew her maiden voyage in April of 1981. Columbia went on to complete an additional 27 missions, including flights launching new satellites into orbit, helping to assemble the International Space Station, and repairing the Hubble Space Telescope. Columbia’s final mission ended in tragedy on February 1, 2003, when she broke up upon re-entry, killing all seven astronauts aboard. While Columbia no longer flies high above the earth, she continues to serve as an inspiring symbol of humanity’s quest to explore our universe.
