There is a state park located about 6 miles west of I-75 Exit 39 in Adel, GA. Just follow the signs. The park boasts several hiking trails, but you want to locate the Gopher Tortoise Trail. The hike is easy and should take less than 30 minutes.
The gopher tortoise is the only tortoise found east of the Mississippi River. Although most gophers live in long burrows, The Burrow Builder has made his home above ground. At marker #15, search the large oak at 15 degrees.
*There is a parking fee of $3 at the park.
*Watch for thorns, snakes, etc.
*Do not touch/disturb the gophers or their burrows.
*Enjoy the park. Maybe you will get to see a gopher!
