BOX MISSING

Difficulty: Easy
Distance: 1 mile

The grounds of Penitentiary Glen Reservation of Lake Metroparks are open to the public from sunrise until a half hour past sunset every day.
The inspiration for this letterbox came from Candy Wonderland, a special seasonal exhibit for children which has been housed inside the Nature Center in December and January of 2006. Also inside this lovely center are many hands-on plant and wildlife exhibits, a working beehive, rental snowshoes, and a lovely nature-themed gift shop.

Penitentiary Glen can be reached by taking I-90 to Rte. 306. Turn south on 306 for about one mile, then turn left at the light onto Rte. 615. At the next traffic light turn right (east) onto Kirtland-Chardon Road. Penitentiary Glen Reservation is about 2 miles ahead, on the right.

Drive through the gate and park in the lot. Check out the trail map at the far side of the parking lot; you will be taking the Gorge Rim Loop, a packed dirt and gravel path. Walk past the miniature railroad and stop before you reach the picnic pavilion. To your left is where the trail begins. Turn right on the trail and follow the brown arrows, but skip the short cut. Twice, the trail takes a sharp turn to the left; keep going until you reach the steps going into the gorge to view Stoney Brook Falls. This is a short side trip, well worth checking out if you are in shape for it.

After Stoney Brook Falls, walk over the board walk. Soon there will be a wooden fence on your right. When the fence ends, walk eight steps and look to your left. There you will see three hemlock trees in a line, right next to the trail. The letterbox is hidden in the "cave" at the base of the third tree.

Soon after you have traversed a second boardwalk, you will have completed the loop of this trail.

If you are curious to know how Penitentiary Glen got its name, pop into the Nature Center after your hike. Hopefully you will also have enough time to check out the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center out back, where you can view rescued owls and other animals, including a bald eagle, a fox and a peregrine falcon.
