Location: Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge - Tubman Road Trail

08/16/2012 NOTE: This box MAY be missing.

Difficulty - very easy

The Tubman Road Trail was named after a road near the trail -- this is in the same region where Harriet Tubman was born. Tubman became a "conductor" of the Underground Railroad, which helped many slaves escape to freedom during the Civil War era.

Go to http://www.friendsofblackwater.org/landtrails.html for more information about the trail, which takes visitors through mixed pine and hardwood forests, sloughs and marshes, and reforested fields. The trail also includes an area that is still recovering from a tornado that blew through several years ago.

This box could be a 'drive by', as it is placed near the parking lot. At the edge of the marsh is a 'deck' viewing area, with a handicap accessible ramp. Hidden beneath the ramp is the "Tubman Road Treasure". If you count the large posts on the side of the deck closest to the kiosk, you'll find the box between the two consecutive posts whose numbers -- when summed -- equal 15.

Please balance the box when replacing it, so it doesn't fall down thru the wood into the grass below.

Afterward, look for animal footprints in the mud surrounding the nearby pond -- or take a walk on the 1.7 mile trail, but remember that no pets are allowed on the trail. If you come during the summer, be sure to bring insect repellent. During the fall hunting season, the Tubman Trail may be closed for safety reasons as it is near private land.

The Tubman Trail is located on Hip Roof Road, off Route 335 about 2.5 miles south of the Blackwater Visitor's Center. You can pick up a brochure at the trail, download one from the website above, or get one at the Visitor's Center.
