BACKSTORY:

The Shiloh Church Lot and Cemetery Association celebrated the 125th anniversary of the dedication of the Shiloh Church building in the Town of Sturgeon Bay on Oct. 11, 2021. Unfortunately no in-person events were scheduled because of the pandemic.

The current red-brick building was constructed after a cyclone blew down the original wood-frame church – built by the Shiloh Scandinavian Moravian Church – on Sept. 17, 1895. After a year of rebuilding, the current building was dedicated on Oct. 11, 1896.

The Shiloh Moravian Church congregation voted to disband and closed the church on June 1, 1975, but the Shiloh Church Lot and Cemetery Association – a nonprofit, nonreligious cemetery association incorporated in 1930 – still maintains both the cemetery and the church building.

UPDATED CLUES (10.27.2021)

From the maple trees lined up along the roadside, line up:

WODACK

HALVERSON
TRODAHL

MILLER

SAMUELSON

Notice the multi-trunk deciduous tree behind Samuelson. You'll find an old black lock-n-lock box under a pile of rocks (called a SPOR) at the base of the tree and inside it holds the 14 year old Shiloh Church Letterbox. After stamping in, please ensure that the logbook is put back in its ziploc, the stamp is in the felt bag and into its ziploc, and then both are placed into the larger ziploc. Please cover this box with the rocks to ensure it does not wash away in snow melt.

FUN FACT: My Mom (Cardmaker Grandma) and I found this box on 8.17.2015. In 2021 Skip Robertson (Robertson's Orchards on Shiloh Road) contacted me via email to tell me that he found this letterbox up in a tree on his property. He didn't know what to do with it but found me and figured I would know what to do. He is aware of this box and approved it to remain on his property.

ORIGINAL CLUES:

Shiloh Church was built in 1896 by Moravians who came up to Door County from Green Bay. It is a beautiful brick church building in the countryside near Sturgeon Bay, on the southern end of the penninsula. The church still holds services during the summer months on Thursday evenings, and they always have an Easter morning service. Most other times, there is no one out there and you will have the grounds to yourself to explore. Keep that in mind when you go looking for this box.

To get to Shiloh church...

From the South: Take 57N to CR-H and turn right onto CR-H. Follow CR-H for 5 and a half miles and turn left onto CR-O/CR-H. Follow CR-H for another three and a half miles. Turn right on CR-S and after 2 miles, turn left onto CR-OO. After one mile, keep an eye out for Shiloh Rd. and turn left onto Shiloh Rd. Follow Shiloh Rd. for about 3 miles. When you get to a stop sign, follow the road to the right (you don't have to stop if you're turning right). Shortly after the stop sign, the road curves left, and shortly thereafter, you'll see the church on your right.

From the North: Get onto 42S/57S. Look for Duluth Ave. around Sturgeon Bay and turn left onto Duluth Ave. After half a mile Duluth Ave. becomes CR-S. Stay on CR-s for almost six miles, and then turn left onto CR-OO.

Once you have found the church and parked, get out of the car and then stand at the start of the path that leads up to the church doors, facing the church with your back to the road. After admiring the beautiful building, look to your right. You should see several large maples in a line along the edge of the road. Count how many maples there are and write down that number: X=________

Now look to your left. You should see several large trees there as well, but you'll notice that the tree closest to you is younger and smaller. Walk over to that tree and stand with your back to it, facing the maples that you counted earlier, with the road on your right. Now walk X paces away from that tree towards the maples and stop. Turn almost 120 degrees to your left. You should be looking at the graveyard on the left side of the church. In that graveyard, you'll see that there are two of the gravestones have tall monuments towering above the others. From where you are standing, look at the leftmost monument.

You will notice that a natural landmark beyond the gravestone is perfectly in line with the monument that you are looking at. Walk to that landmark and around the back side under leaves and branches you will find a letterbox. X marks the spot!

Happy hunting!
