Menemsha Hills - http://www.thetrustees.org/pages/322_menemsha_hills.cfm
North Road, Chilmark, Martha's Vineyard, MA
Former woods roads and footpaths pass through several distinct ecosystems that demonstrate the unusual topographic diversity of Menemsha Hills. The Harris Trail loops through perched wetlands that support red maples, cinquefoil, beech, and black cherry. Oaks and ground-hugging shrubs border the path to Prospect Hill, one of the highest points on Martha's Vineyard, whose view includes the village of Menemsha, the Elizabeth Islands, and Gay Head Light. The approach to the coast features ground covers that tolerate salt-laden air, drying winds, and fast-draining soils. At Menemsha Hills' bluffs, a view of the Great Sand Bank provides a stark reminder of the Vineyard's glacial origin. To the northeast stands the remains of a tall brick chimney, the last vestige of a nineteenth-century brickyard that operated along the Roaring Brook.

Drive to Menemsha Hills Reservation, North Road.

Park in lot - from parking lot follow "Harris Trail" to "Great Sand Overlook (1.7m / 35 mins.). Use trail map to orient yourself. Left at trail sign - continue to follow signs to "Great Sands Overlook." Up a set of stairs, continue straight at Prospect Hill sign (option: climb the hill to check out the view or save it for the return trip!). Cross the road and stay on the trail, continue left at next marker to Great Sand Overlook. Up on the hill enjoy the ocean view. Follow down steep hill, this is a windy path, cross plank bridge, cross over 2nd plank bridge - ocean on your left, don't give up, you're almost there! Continue stratight through stone wall opening, bear left at next trail sign - you made it! Straight up boardwalk to overlook, the view is amazing!

To your left is the Gay Head Lighthouse, with Lobsterville Beach in front of it and around the bend Menemsha Harbor. In front of you the Elizabeth Islands and far to your right Woodshole.

The Letter Box can be found five steps from the left post nearest the stairs, under the deck behind a log.

Return the way you came or take the trail right at the end of the boardwalk down to a beach.
