Upland Forest Letterbox Directions:

Find your way to the Acton Arboretum, Acton, MA. (From Rt. 2 go north on Rt. 27. Pass the Public Safety Facility on your right. Turn right on the second road on your right (Taylor Road). Within 100 yards turn left into the Arboretum parking lot.) A map for the Arboretum can be found here: Acton Arboretum Map

Time to walk! Enter the arboretum through the gate off the parking lot, and bear right down a gravel path. Go straight past a stone seating area on your left and then past a pond on your right. At the Y in the trail bear right. You are on the yellow blaze trail. You will come to a bench and a trail off to the right, but don’t turn, stay on the yellow blaze trail. At a second bench on the right, bear left on the main trail as it passes through a stone wall.

Soon you will come to a boardwalk, walk along it to the end. (Now comes the off-trail, bush-whacking part of this trip.) Standing at the end of the boardwalk look straight ahead at a large solitary white pine in the woods. Walk to that pine. Behind it see another large pine with three trunks. Walk to the three-trunked pine. Walk around it and find a large round boll at the base. Stand with your back to the boll. Ahead of you is a glacial erratic that looks like a pyramid. Walk to this stone.

Standing at the pyramid stone, with your back to the big pine you came from, look 45 degrees to the left and sight another large pine with a double trunk, next to a stone wall. About ten feet to the left of the double-trunk pine tree there two big boulders holding up the highest part of the stone wall. Look between the two big boulders to find the Upland Forest Letterbox.

Hide the box again when you are done, and work your way back to the boardwalk. If you want to continue around a loop (you have already done about half of it), continue on the yellow blaze trail. At the end of a second boardwalk you will come to a T, turn left between the ponds. At the next T you can go either left to loop back to the original trial, right to see the flower gardens, or straight up over the grassy hill which will take you back to the parking lot.
