This letterbox is right off of interstate 80 at the Illinois Welcome Center -- you can only get to the welcome center from the eastbound direction, however, it's between exits and shouldn't be to much trouble to get yourself turned around if needed.

Also, I need to note that this welcome center is closed at night, they have a huge gate that they close. So, this is a day time find.

As you make your way back you will see two pull offs, the first is a turn around for vehicles longer than 40 feet. The next pull off is the one you want, it's dedicated to a man whom you would never place in the mid-west, nor the Mississippi. There is a beautiful view of the I80 bridge and the Mississippi.

There are 3 picnic tables here, find yourself a parking spot and take off on foot. You can walk your dogs here -- so watch what you step in.

You will see a tree in the woods that got so scared that all its bark fell off and now it stands naked. Go to that tree and with your back to the picnic area look down hill.

There is a tree cemetery down there. Walk down hill about 50 feet to this grave yard of trees. There are three to your left and two to your right -- you will find this letterbox underneath the second tree from the right at the roots of a smaller tree that fell over on top of it.

This box has a hand carved stamp, bring your own stamp pad.

You can now circle your car around to the welcome center itself or head back towards the interstate.
