Mothman

*** NOTE: As of May 6, 2011 this box is missing due to work along the Ohio River bank. I'll recarve and replace but it will be a while before I can get around to it. ***

This letterbox is for the legendary Mothman of 1960’s Point Pleasant, West Virginia and inspiration for the book and movie, Mothman Prophecies. Much can be found on the sightings of the unusual being and most mention that one of the first was by two young couples out on a double date and who were “spooked” at the abandoned World War II TNT plant area outside of Point Pleasant on November 15, 1966. They saw a man-sized, winged figure with glowing red eyes that flew above their vehicle as they raced back to town at 100 miles per hour. Sightings continued in the general area and then dissipated with the December 15, 1967 collapse of the Silver Bridge that spans the Ohio River, connecting Point Pleasant with Gallipolis, Ohio. Forty-six people were killed. Some think the Mothman caused the bridge failure, while others feel he was trying to warn of its impending doom. At any rate, the impressive stainless steel statue at Point Pleasant’s Gunn Park and the annual Mothman Festival attract many visitors to the “Home of the Mothman” 40 years later.

Directions: (AKA Ode to the Mothman)

Point Pleasant town is where to start
Around the Fourth & Viand part.
Look for a park named for Gunn
Then, when that is done
Admire the statue of stainless steel
And wonder “Was the creature real?”
Turn around to an inn named Lowe
North on Main Street, you should go.
Visit the Mothman Museum should you have time.
If not, continue with this rhyme.
Left on Fifth, head toward the river
Does the Mothman make you shiver?
Pass through the wall made for flood
C’mon now, don’t be a dud!
Turn right and take the RiverTrail.
It’s too late to tuck your tail.
Find the railroad in the air
Now is time for a final prayer.
Face west toward the O-hi-o
Then left to a box elder, you need to go.
Look on the side opposite of east
And you will find the Mothman beast ...

Please be careful not to puncture the pouch covered in camoflage tape while probing for it. Also, be certain that all the bags are well sealed before replacing so that the contents aren't damaged by water. If you enjoy Mothman, you may wish to look for Chief Cornstalk and the First Caesarean Baby in America while you’re in town. There are a few other boxes just across the river in Gallipolis, OH. Happy Letterboxing!
