March 6, 2007 - First Clue updated due to missing book. I'm giving you the answer for now until I have time to redo the clue.

OK, I know the weather has been uncommonly nice so far this winter but you KNOW what’s coming. Once it starts to get nasty and you want to spend the day inside but long for a letterbox, here’s the solution. I planted a letterbook in the Meriden Public Library.

The library is on Miller Street. You can also get to the parking lot off of Liberty Street across from City Hall. The letterbook is only available while the library is open and they change their hours from time to time. I suggest you visit the library website at http://www.cityofmeriden.org/CMS/default.asp?CMS_AreaID=64 and check the hours before you go.

The planting of this letterbook was approved by the library director and the board of directors. Please respect the library environment and its resources. Please be sure to return the letterbook to it’s proper place so others can enjoy it. The library staff have copies of the clues and the answers in case a book you need is missing.

**PLEASE NOTE** There are 2 stamps in this box. The big ugly one was my first attempt at carving and I did not have the right tools. The second is one I did after I had a tutorial with rtrw of Hartford. She suggested that I put them both in the box. You can stamp either one or both but PLEASE leave them both in the box.

The letterbook is labeled with a Dewey Decimal number. It consists of three numbers, a letter and three more numbers. Follow the clues to find out the Dewey number of the book.

_______ _______ _______ _______ _______ _______ _______

#1. Start your search in the reference section. Find a small book titled, “Birds of Connecticut” and numbered R598.09746 Te. What bird is on page 225? (Answer is the Goose)

If it is a Wild Turkey then the first letterbook number is 4.
If it is a Barred Owl then the first letterbook number is 7.
If it is a Canada Goose then the first letterbook number is 9.
If it is an Eastern Bluebird then the first letterbook number is 5.

#2. Stay in the reference section and find the VERY large Commercial Atlas. Find a map of Connecticut. Meriden lies between two lines of longitude (those long lines that go from the North Pole to the South Pole). Both lines start with the same number. This number is the second number in the letterbook.

#3. Go to 974.62 We, a book entitled “150 Years of Meriden”. Look at the pictures next to page 276. In what year did President Theodore Roosevelt visit Meriden? The LAST digit of that year is the third in the letterbook.

#4. The Meriden Library produces and sells beautiful pewter ornaments that depict Meriden landmarks. Which landmark was released for the 1994 holiday? The LAST letter of this landmark fills the fourth letterbook blank.

#5. I LOVE cookbooks! I have a huge collection. Find a book about my favorite ingredient. It has the number 641.8 De. There are actually 5 different books that have the same number. There is only one that is all about one ingredient. You need that one. Find a recipe for Devastation. What kind of fruit does this recipe call for?

If it is apples, the fifth letterbook number is 3.
If it is bananas, the fifth letterbook number is 7.
If it is cherries, the fifth letterbook number is 2.
If it is raisins, the fifth letterbook number is 9.

#6. The Meriden Library has a multipurpose meeting room. Who was this room named after? The sixth letterbook number is…

2 if it is Tomie dePaola
5 if it is Joseph Griffin
9 if it is Ella Grasso
6 if it is Henry Altobello

#7. There is a quilt in the entrance of the library. Find the block made by Teresa Ferrucci. It depicts a statue of a general. In what year was the general born? The last digit in that year fills the last blank in the letterbook.

Now you have the Dewey number of the letterbook! Now go and find the book! Be discreet when stamping in and please leave the library tidy.
