The trail head for the Sutherland Trail is in Catalina State Park, which is a fee area. Leashed pets are allowed. Please practice No Trace techniques. Do not drink the stream water without purification.
The cache is about .65 miles from the parking lot by GPS, about a 20 minute walk over mostly level trail with a couple of short grade changes. Eventually you will come to the junction of the Canyon Loop Trail and the Sutherland Trail. The Sutherland Trail goes upwards via a series of steps utilizing railroad tie-like timbers as risers. The letterbox is located to the left (when ascending) of the trail between the timbers 27 and 28. Or, if descending from the top, between timbers 3 and 4.
The letterbox is contained within a small ammunition box that can be retrieved without stepping off of the trail. So there will be no trampling of vegetation, no creation of a “social” trail. It is surrounded by rocks but it is not necessary to move even one rock to expose it. One can truly “leave no trace” in retrieving this letterbox.
Please look before reaching as venomous creatures abound. Be vigilant, as this is a well used trail
