"Joshua," said Mrs. Babcock, "please tell us what you did over summer vacation."

This is his story:

"I went to this neat summer camp with my sister. She wanted me to go with her to help her since she has a disability and she didn't want to go alone. Very near the camp, there was a trail that one of the counselors, Norm, took us on. There were some painted markings on the trees along the trail. They were the same color as the Sneetches from this great book I read. We followed the trail all the way to a lake where a bunch of stone walls met. But we didn't stop there, we kept on going. Then we came to a wooden bridge. After we went over it, we saw an arrow that said something about a loop. We went the way the arrow was pointing. At the first fork we came to, we all went right, but it didn't go anywhere but to the lake, so we went back to the main trail. Then we saw this really big stone wall that looked like it used to be a dam. We all giggled 'cause Norm said that word out loud. We didn't go down to it 'cause Norm said we couldn't cross it without getting our feet wet. So we just kept going. Then we came to an even bigger bridge. It had arrows near it, too. We followed the second one which did not follow the paint on the trees. This path brought us to a clearing with some wood stacked in the middle. We never did figure out what the wood was for, since there wasn't even a fireplace. Anyway, near the wood was a big hole in the ground. Norm said it was an old cellar hole and that maybe a long time ago there was a house here. We decided to go into the hole. We hadn't even gotten through the opening when Norm said that this would be a good place to learn how to use a compass. He told us to look at 220* to see where it would bring us. He was really happy when we got it right and told him that it brought us to a stump. He then told us to go out of the hole and look for the big cornerstone. Then he gave us four more readings, 215*, 180*, 245*, and 30* to see if we could find the treasures that he had hidden. It took us a while, but we finally got them all. We had such fun learning how to use the compass. It was starting to get dark, so we headed back over the bridges and to the camp. When we got back, everyone looked over the treasures they had found. What a great day."
