Spyglass Hill Treasure Series

Come anytime, but if you love to watch a beautiful sunset, pack up a picnic supper and head out for a Spyglass Hill view point with a picnic gazebo. If you want to watch a spectacular sunset you should check the paper for the time. The walk has a slight upgrade, but you won't notice it unless you're pushing a wheelchair. It is less than a mile round-trip to box #1. If you are seeking all three boxes add another mile. Allow time to find the boxes, enjoy the view, feast on your picnic, and soak in the sunset. Be sure to leave before it gets dark so you can find your way back to the car. Ahhh, what a life!

From the #405 take Mac Arthur Blvd. toward Newport Beach about 5 to six miles, to turn Left on San Joaquin Hills Road (away from Fashion Island). In about a mile on San Joaquin Hills Road you will turn Left on Spyglass Hill Road.
* See below for the rest of the story.

From PCH turn up the hill at MacArthur Blvd to turn at the third right onto San Joaquin Hills road (away from Fashion Island). In about a mile on San Joaquin Hills Road, turn Left on Spyglass Hill Road.
* See below for the rest of the story.

From Newport Coast Road turn toward Fashion Island on San Joaquin Hills Road and in about a mile turn right on Spyglass Hill Road, then follow the directions given below.

* Once on Spyglass Hill Road, go to the second right, turn, and drive up El Capitan. In about a half mile you will see an access road with a locked bar/gate on your left. Park on the right.

Go to the path between the rocks, to the right of the gate, and cross the first path. In 50 or 60 paces, you should turn right onto the second path. You will be heading south at this time. The dirt path will meander past many interesting rocks and boulders. You’ll see some great places to plant a letterbox, but don’t stop. If it’s summertime, watch for snakes. (I’ve never seen one there, but who knows?) Anyway, it’s a nice wide path.

As you round the last curve you will see the gazebo. Walk into the center of the gazebo, and stand at the center of the diagram on the slab floor. Look straight ahead. If it is a clear day you will see Catalina Island to the right of the post (240 degrees SW). If it is a very clear day you can see San Clemente Island to the left of the post, (due south). Observe the beautiful homes built on the surrounding hills. The writer, Dean Kuntz, has a 30,000 square foot home nearby, and Kobe Bryant and Tiger Woods have multi-million dollar homes, across Newport Coast Drive, on top of the Hill. Whew!

But the wonder of this place is the gorgeous view. It has been there for millions of years. Although it’s constantly changing because of development, just look at our out-stretched ocean and the configuration of surrounding hills and vales that is essentially changeless (unless there's a BIG earthquake.)

In our Spyglass Hill box #2 you will find a map to #3 - the Treasure, which is about 1/4 mile walk to a small park near the top of the hill. It is a 1/2 mile drive to get there. This is a playground park built over a reservoir holding water to irrigate the slopes on the hill. If you dig down 10 or 12 inches you will hit the ceiling over the reservoir. The letterbox is not buried in the sand, it is in the Secret Place.

For clues to #2 and #3 go to Atlas Quest.com., and enjoy your Spyglass Hill explorations.
