Cloverdale is an interesting little town right off Highway 101 and the most northerly Sonoma County settlement. It is home to the Citrus Fair and a famous fiddling contest held each February. The RIP Cloverdale letterbox is in the local cemetery. It’s a beautiful old tract of land next to the Russian River and rather hilly. If you come on a rainy day don’t wear your good clothes. Most of the grave stones seem to date back to the late 19th century. There are lots of Italian surnames, some Finnish, some Nova Scotians and the usual medley of mostly European names. I hope you enjoy your visit there.

To locate the RIP Cloverdale letterbox find downtown Cloverdale. From Highway 101 any exit will get you there. In the middle of downtown Cloverdale find First Street and turn in the general direction of Chicago. Continue on First Street passing a number of streets, travelling under the freeway and heading for the Russian River. Turn left on Crocker Road and park. If you find yourself on the bridge over the Russian River you have travelled too far.

Park your car in one of the spaces on Crocker Road and walk toward Japan until you find the pedestrian/service entrance to the Cloverdale cemetery. Walk approximately 30 steps down the main path, then take the smaller path going up hill. As you pass give a nod to the Groves, father and mother. Soon after take another smaller path generally heading east as though you were continuing that aborted trip to Chicago. Soon enough you will come to some concrete steps. If you miss the steps and reach Clyde Halber you know you’ve gone too far and should back up. Walk up the steps and then continue on the dirt path until you reach Daniel and Louise Wambold. Stand next to their stone and determine southeast. Walk about 20 steps southeast until you run into James Kleiser. If you miss old James you will probably fall off the hill, so look carefully for him. From there head up the hill at 60 degrees until you reach the stone for David W. Hall. At David W. Hall head north and up at approximately 320 degrees. Continue walking down the center of the two rows of graves. You will know you are going the right way if you note the McKoons on your left, the McCutchens on your right, Joshua Adams on your left and John Bowman on your right. Soon you will reach the larger stone belonging to JR Wisecarver on your left. From there head due north about eleven steps. Hum the old spiritual Rock of Ages. Behind the stone with the carved Rock of Ages you will find an oak three or four steps away. Reach into the head high cavity and find the letterbox.
