The Sweethearts of Breakheart letterbox was created to celebrate our favorite place to hike and bike together: on Breakheart Trail, around Frosty Hollow Pond. Sweethearts is a short walk on fairly easy terrain, and will take about 50 minutes to complete. Wear boots in the spring, it tends to get a little muddy. Remember to wear ORANGE during hunting season OCT through FEB.

Sweethearts is located in Arcadia (Exeter, RI), to get there: From Rt. 95 North, take EXIT 5A toward Exeter (Rt. 102) and bear right onto Rt. 3. From Rt. 95 South, take EXIT 4 for Exeter/Rt. 165. From route 3 take Rt. 165 West for approx. 2.8 miles. Next take a RIGHT turn onto Frosty Hollow Road (look for the Camp E-Huntee sign and the West Exeter Baptist Church-- this is where you turn!) Go down Frosty Holly Rd. for about 1.5 miles. Take a RIGHT at the four way (straight will take you to Camp E-Huntee) and continue for about 0.5 miles. The road will turn left sharply along a high stone wall, just up ahead on the right there will be a dam. Continue to the parking lot on your left and park.

From the parking lot your journey begins! Facing the pond, turn RIGHT, down the road you just came up, heading towards the dam. Cross over the wooden bridge, passing through the two large boulders. Look ahead – there is a red gate through which you must pass. Notice that the path is marked with YELLOW BLAZES. Soon after the red gate you will come to a fork in the road, follow the yellow blazes to the LEFT, this is Breakheart Trail (you will see a sign saying this just up ahead).

Continue on -- note that the pond will always be on your left (although you may not always see it). Eventually you will cross another smaller wooden bridge with a stream and waterfall. Enjoy the scenery, it is beautiful every season.

Next you will see a fallen tree crossing your path. This tree points at a boulder just in front of it. Cross the tree and keep going!

Pay attention: eventually you will walk up a slight incline and see three uprooted trees on the left. The roots of the trees will be facing you, on the opposite side there are some young pines growing. From the giant uprooted trees, it is about 64 paces to a rock wall which crosses the path (however, there are no rocks in the path). Standing where the rock wall crosses your path, look up the hill, directly to your RIGHT. Do you see two huge blue/green moss covered boulders? Perhaps you only see one, the larger of the two, however, as you walk up the hill both will become apparent. Your Sweetheart is being protected by the larger of the two.

On the left side of the boulder it looks as if the trees are growing directly out of the rock. Two in the front but also one on the backside of the rock... this posterior tree is the one you want, so head around the back. Here it is! Look behind this tree, in between the rock where it has split just enough to fit a Sweetheart snug and sound! Please take care of this letterbox like you would take care of your sweetheart... replace carefully and securely!

After you are done, continue on the path to travel all the way around the pond. You will stay on the YELLOW trail for a ways, eventually coming to a path on your LEFT. Go down the steep decline, (you are still on YELLOW for the time being). Pass over another bridge with another stream and waterfall. This is always a beautiful place to stop and enjoy the scenery with your sweetheart! After you are done, pay attention to where you are going: the yellow trail turns right directly after the stream DO NOT follow yellow any longer. Instead, head straight until you see another path on your LEFT, take this path through a pine forest. You will start to see the pond again through the trees, along with a few small streams and fields. The rest is simple: continue on this path until you see another red gate, when you pass through you will be back in the parking lot and you car. We hope that you enjoyed this nice little walk as much as we always do!
