Old Palestine has the gravesite of Holloway Daniel Murphy who was shot to death during his first day on the job as a Texas Highway Patrolman by Bonnie Parker & Clyde
Barrow. H.D. Murphy and another patrolman thought Bonnie & Clyde were two stranded motorist and stopped to render aid to the two gangsters. Both patrolmen were gunned down as they dismounted their motorcycles by the infamous pair. A farmer who saw the incident said Bonnie and Clyde then walked up to the dying officers and shot both of them in the head. To this day H.D. Murphy holds the record for being the youngest Texas Highway Patrolman killed in the line of duty and also had the shortest tenure as a Texas Highway Patrolman that was killed in the line of duty. (The above info was taken from http://www.tx-wooddell.net/cherokee/s/old_palestine_cemt.htm)

The Wondering Hummingbird is located in Old Palestine Cemetery. To get to this cemetery, you will first need to make your way to Alto (not Palestine). From the
intersection of Hwy 69 and 21 you will go East on 21 for 3.6 miles to a historical marker for the cemetery. It will be on your right. Be sure and read both historical markers at the cemetery. As you enter the cemetery, you will see two flagpoles. Turn right and go around until you see a third flagpole. Park here. Standing with your back to the flagpole facing SW, you will see a multi trunk tree (about 10-11 trunks). The hummingbird has been wondering where you have been. Be sure and spend some time looking around in this cemetery. There are a couple of neat graves here but I am not sure of their exact location. One of them is for the gentleman that was described above, who was killed by Bonnie and Clyde
and the other headstone has something about someone being murdered (I am not sure of the name, but it is in the same section as HD Murphy). If you find either headstone, please email me so that I can include their names/location in the clue. Please make sure the lid is on tight for the box and make sure that it can’t be seen from any
direction.

On your way back to Alto, be sure and stop at the other historical marker. It is located in front of a house and is the grave of the first Anglo born in Texas.
