New Echota was the site of the Cherokee National Capital from 1825-1838. It is the home to the first printed Cherokee newspaper the Cherokee Phoenix (2/21/1828-5/31/1834). New Echota is located on the Trail of Tears Highway near the town of Calhoun. The site has a wonderful walking tour full of historical information.

The Site is located 1 mile east of I-75 off Hwy 225. The hours are Tuesday-Saturday 9am - 5pm, Sunday 2pm - 5:30pm. It is CLOSED on Mondays (except legal holidays) Thanksgiving, Christmas & New Year's Day. Also closed on Tuesdays following legal holidays. Parking is free, but there is a small fee for the tour. It is well worth the money.

Clue: Go to the Museum. You can explore the museum before or after you go and enjoy the tour. There are so many things to take in, in the museum. Go to the desk and let the ROD's (Rangers on Duty) know that you would like to take the tour. You have the choice of going on your own or having a guided tour. Both ways are great, but you learn so much more with the guided. By the way the ROD's know about the LB, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask. Box #1 is placed at the first stop of the tour - The Cherokee Farmstead. There are several buildings here. Locate the Smokehouse. Go inside. Once inside, with your back facing the door, look for the wooden saltbox--it looks like a trough to me. Walk over to the saltbox, go to the middle and look behind it near the wall. The box is located under the saltbox near a rock.

Box #2 -- continue on your tour until you find the cabin. Once inside, look toward the left side of the loft. It is located up on the left end of the loft.... If your short like me, you may need a little help.

Please be sure to thank the rangers. They were extremely helpful and happy to let me plant the box.
Happy Hunting!!!
