While the California Poppy is nearly everywhere around here, there is one spot that I find to be more picturesque, more purely "California" than any other. This stretch of pristine coastland has just recently become "official" parkland (people have always traipsed all over this land, previously illegally, but now there are signs saying "no dogs" and everything).
To get there, take Hwy 1 to just North of the town of Cayucos. If you're traveling South, you will see a billboard on your left that says "Welcome to Cayucos". Park in the pullout directly accross from this sign. If you're traveling North, keep your eyes out for this sign on your right, but you'll have a hard time seeing it, so keep your eyes on the rearview mirror. You may need to make a U-turn (but there are plenty of places to do this) to come back to where you need to park. Park near the Call Box.

Take trail towards ocean, past big rock on your left, and through the opening in the fence. Take the trail to the LEFT heading towards Morro Rock. The trail splits, keep heading towards Morro Bay along the edge of the bluff. (You can also pick up the Blue Eyed Grass letterbox near here). The trail splits again, and take the lesser-used left-hand trail back towards the Highway.

See the big reddish rock outcropping? See the white-ish rock below it, near a couple of bushes? Head towards that white-ish rock. You can stay on the path for a while, but eventually, you'll have to veer right, blazing your own trail.

From the white rock, look at the big rocky outcropping. See the tallest rock on the left, a bit separated from the big "hill' of rocks? Now, see how there is a rock to its right, and how it sort of forms a "U" shape between the two? Head to that "U" by climbing up the hill to the right of those two rocks, and around the back. When you get to the back side, you will see a spattering of poppies that will take your breath away (if there's been plenty of rain and it's spring). You'll also see that the "U" has a bunch of poison oak growing in it, but just below the poison oak there is a little monkeyflower plant, and to the right of the monkey flower plant are 3 mid-size rocks stacked one on top of another, hiding the Poppy Letterbox.
