Mansfield State Historic Site is located in DeSoto Parish, four miles south of the town of Mansfield on LA 175. Exit I-49 to the town of Mansfield and follow LA 175 south. This is the location of the last major Confederate victory of the Civil War. The 177-acre site has a museum exhibiting Civil War weapons, arms, uniforms, letters, diaries, documents, and other related artifacts. An interpretive trail named in honor of General Mouton winds through the site. In 1973, this State Historic Site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, an honorary designation for significant historical sites. There is a $2.00 fee to enter the museum and grounds.

The website for the site is http://www.crt.state.la.us/parks/iMansfld.aspx , or get there from www.lastateparks.com

After visiting the museum, walk to the northeast end of the parking lot, past the museum building. Walk up the road away from the building. Where the road curves to the left, a grassy area opens in front of you. Walk through the field down a slight hill and onto a wide trail leading to a wooden rail fence. Find the sign for “Gray’s Louisiana Infantry Brigade”, which will have its back to you if you got there the way I did. After reading the sign, look straight left for a big tree with a younger sibling. The tree has a somewhat hollow area out at its base facing the sign; this is where you’ll find the box.
