This letterbox was placed in honor of my dear friend Sally’s birthday. She is a gift from God to many…

“The Gift” is located in Hurd State Park in East Hampton. From route 151, the park can be found two ways.

METHOD ONE: Take Hurd Park Road off of route 151 to the main entrance of the park. Drive or walk to the loop at the end of the paved road. Several trails begin at the back side (river side) of this loop. Take the one marked with the cross country ski trail sign “easiest.”

Proceed uphill. Enjoy the 2 HUGE (I mean HUGE!) trees on your left – one an evergreen and the other deciduous. There are also yellow blazes on some of the trees.

Another remarkable landmark...a large quartz rock on the right side of the path. Beautiful!

At the crest of the hill (approximately 18 paces past the beautiful quartz rock), look left and notice an open meadow. When I went, the grasses in this space were golden yellow and gently swaying in the January breeze. Several cedar trees are at the far edge of this little clearing.

Go to these cedar trees (about another 18 paces) and then walk at 90 degrees east for 8 paces to a large rock.

Find the letterbox at the far side of the rock between the rock and some wood.

Remember to be stealthy and rehide the box well so that it isn't inadvertently discovered by non-letterboxers.

METHOD TWO: In the winter months, the main gate to Hurd Park is closed. Off of route 151, at the traffic light, just before Hurd Park Road, is a small parking area on the right. Park there. Stand in front of the yellow, metal gate so that you can see two trails going into the park. Take the left most trail marked with a cross country ski trail sign.

As you stroll along you will come across an intersecting cross country ski trail. Do not take this. Stay on the trail you began on.

After about a 5-10 minute walk you will notice the gorgeous quartz rock noted in the earlier directions, on the left side of the trail. Go to it and then go in the direction you just came, 18 paces.

Notice an open meadow on the left. When I went, the grasses in this space were golden yellow and gently swaying in the January breeze. It was delightful. Several cedar trees are at the far edge of this little clearing. Go to these cedar trees (about another 18 paces) and then walk at 90 degrees east for 8 paces to a large rock.
