One assumes the Great Basin Pocket Mouse was named, like any other species of Pocket Mouse, because it is small enough to fit into a pocket. This begs the question: Has anyone run into a mouse too LARGE to fit into a pocket? Further, what would one call such a rodent? The Eddie Bauer Canvas Duffel Mouse?
Putting aside these burning questions, how does one find a Great Basin Pocket Mouse in the wild? In this regard, two facts are significant: This species is nocturnal, and it hibernates during winter. Practically speaking, this means 1) you will need to bring a powerful flashlight, and 2) you’ll have to brush away any snow that obscures clues to the pocket mouse’s whereabouts.
