[May 28, 2007: This box had a short life. Hicks6 found some of the contents strewn around the site, and says a rock slide may have exposed the box. I'm bummed, but I knew this was a heavily-trafficked site from the beginning, so am not completely surprised. Note that this letterbox is now unavailable.]

Lots of bird-watching books can teach you that the bufflehead is a small black-and-white duck, that it nests mostly in tree holes made by Northern Flickers, and that you can find it, among other places, in northern Idaho. However, I myself have been unable, since the first time I heard this duck’s name, to picture anything other than a bizarre bird with the head of a buffalo, struggling to fly while its massive cranium weighs it down.

Your search for this particular bufflehead will take you to the hiking trails on Tubbs Hill in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Trail maps are posted at both major trailheads, one on Third Street, and one on Tenth.

IMPORTANT NOTE: It would be easy to re-hide this badly, so please, please take extra care, in this busy hiking area, to return the box without disturbing the moss (which would be environmentally insensitive, anyway, right?) and without leaving other hints that it is there. Maybe sprinkle some dead leaves over the site when you’re done. If this goes missing, I won’t replace it; please do your best to see that this box is available to many future finders.

For clarity’s sake, each word of this rebus clue is on a separate line.
