Hobo Hangout on the Douglas Trail

Take the 75th St exit westbound from highway 52. When you come to the town of Douglas, there will be a small parking area on the south side of the road. Park here. The Douglas Trail is accessible to hikers, bikers, as well as horseback riders. Walk south along the paved trail (toward Rochester). You will pass a cement marker on the right side of the trail that is marked “M 135.” Keep walking. Further down the trail, there is a large tree that branches into 4 separate trunks, but one of the trunks has been cut off. Further down the trail beyond this tree, the horseback trail comes fairly close to the paved trail (you might see some orange trail markers with arrows pointing up. At this point, cross over to the horseback trail and continue southward. You will eventually come to a sign on the left side of the trail that says “Douglas Saloon, Food and Drinks” with an arrow pointing to the left. This sign may be very overgrown in the mid to late summer so look carefully! Take this "trail" eastward. Again, if you come in the mid to late summer, the weeds and burrs may have grown to a significant degree -- often nearly obscuring the path. You will come across an old trail that is really only a couple of old tire tracks heading south. Walk about 50 feet down this trail. You should see a large tree with a couple of old boards nailed about 9 feet from the ground. There is a large branch extending far out from one side of this tree. In the crotch of these branches, the letterbox is hidden under a stray piece of wood. Further to the east you might see an old couch and chair in what looks like a worn out impromptu meeting place.
