The Peter Bakewell Trails border the south end of the Casa Dorinda retirement home (where Julia Child resided until her demise) & can be accessed from the west of the beautiful old stone pillars near the flood control basin on Olive Mill Road. Some sections of these trails lead through the remains of the old olive grove that once surrounded the mill for which the street is named. The whole area is full of mature sycamores, oaks & bay laurels, there are even a couple of bee trees. The leisurely half mile circle of trails have a paved section & packed dirt on the rest . It is a VERY popular dog walk & there are always folks around.
Peter Bakewell was president of both the Montecito Trails Foundation & the Montecito Association & was instrumental in physically establishing a trail system; he started in the 1960s with just a couple of trails.

From Hwy 101 North take the Olive Mill Road exit 94A, turn right & drive 4/10 mile north , then park near by the old stone gateway on the right.

**Bad News!! As of March 15, 2008 the Sycamore Gate letterbox has gone missing. It was last stamped March 1st. If any hardy soul who is NOT allergic to poison oak wants to do a more thorough search than we did (& hopefully find that the box just fell down somewhere......(?)we welcome your initiative. **

SYCAMORE GATE - Before you even pass through the imposing stone gateway, look on top of the first stone pillar on the right, the one that is closest to the road. There you'll find the first letterbox.
Continue down the paved path to the bridge that crosses Montecito Creek at the flood control basin; you can even see the fish ladder. Soon you’ll see a TRAIL marker, turn right & go down & up the dip.

JULIA & THE BAY LAUREL - At the top of the dip count off 40 paces. You should be even with a big circle of bay laurels just off the trail. See the rock in the middle? See the rock to the right of it? Julia is buried to the left of the right rock under bark logs.
Back on the main path continue to the right & soon you will pass a massive mansion on the right. When a fork in the path appears, turn left here & follow along til the next intersection where another left turn is in order.

HAPPY JACK - At this left count 60 paces. You should see a circle of 10 oak trunks on your right. Directly in their center under a burl this delightful character is resting.
Continue walking, always curving left til you reach the pavement once again. Take yet another left at the wooden bench & stroll til you find the cement bench on your right. Sit for a bit.

L’IL SPRATS LOOKIN’ FOR THE (FISH) LADDER - Behind you is an oak tree if you're sitting on the bench...go behinf the oak & peer at the base where you’ll find little fishies resting in their place under bark & sticks.
And then you can follow the pavement right back to where you started.
