GUILFORD PRESERVES LETTERBOXES

Recently I have discovered some wonderful, new (to me) trails in Guilford, where I lived for ten years and have taught for 32 years. They are special! One actually is accessed through a neighboring town, but is in Guilford. **Town Hall has some very helpful maps.

PAMELA KANSAS JOHN ANDREW MELVIN AMY ALABAMA MERIDEN ERIC SAM URSULA LINDA PERU VANCE MARYLAND AL LARRY THERESA LOUIS EVAN YANNI ELLINGTON RACHEL PAUL ROBERT ELLIOTT SEAN ERNIE RON VICTOR YORK EVANSTON ESTEVAN ANNE OSCAR ISABEL LORRAINE LUKE SARA ALEXIS ROCHESTER DON FRANK ADAM CATHY PORTLAND ROME ROGER MARTIN SAL RALPH OLIVER HELEN ERIE SANTIAGO, ALFRED DAN ELENA ESTONIA ROCKAWAY IAN NICK DENNIS ULYSSES VIENNA MICHELLE ENGLAND ETHIOPIA NEVADA RICH HARRY HILARY DENVER OHIO FREEPORT LOUISIANA ABRAHAM MAX BEN ARIZONA UGANDA ETHAN CARL OTTO EVE MIKE EARL STEVE ALI DANIELLE ROSALIND OLIVIA PATRICK EDDIE RHODES NATE ASHLYN THOMAS EUROPE DENISE LAPLAND LESTER ETHAN HOUSTON FRED TERENCE ORION NED TIM OSLO LATVIA LIVERPOOL OTIS PETER ERNEST NEAL TOM RANDY ORVILLE OREGON ALLISTER DAVID EDGAR XAVIER TYLER EDWARD NORBERTO STANLEY WASHINGTON ISHMAEL OMAR NORMAN

Park along the road at telephone pole #2585 and the white “P.” Follow white along the marsh to a rocky area. At a large “balanced-looking” rock on the right (geocache beneath it), head left along the lower edge of the ledge/rocks and look under the first rock on the right. (about _-3/4 hour)

Park by the trail sign on the cul-de-sac. Follow the yellow blazes. Pass a rocky ledge on the left. Go through some wet areas and pass an old woods road. Between the second and third yellow arrow, look under the first large boulder on the right which is close to the trail. (about _ -3/4 hour).

Park at the cul-de-sac. Start on green until it meets the dotted trail - go right. When you come to the preserve sign, bear left and soon you will cross “bridges.” Start climbing, following the dotted trail. The watercourse will be on your left. Eventually the trail veers to the right, away from the water. You will begin a gradual descent, passing a large gnarly tree by a broken down wall. Zigzag downhill, and stop just before the water (sported a dramatic waterfall on the wet day I planted). Look for the large stump on the left, and check by the two rocks at its base. (about _ hour).

Final Box

Enter the trail next to house #48. Go left on white, UPHILL, then down. Cross the bridge and then go right on red (will connect back to white to complete the loop). When you come to an area strewn with boulders on both sides, behind go to the first large one on the left. Look under the smaller rock to its right. Continue on red, bearing left with the arrow and then meet up with the “X” trail. Follow it through a wet area and over 5 “bridges”, then head left on white and you will soon see familiar territory.
(about 45 minutes with a 3-year-old - although this is not a good trail for kids or pets, or in bad weather! Take care.).
