Mad Piper Letterbox

Adopted by Scarab of the Doubtful Guests until placer's return.

Virginia Rail
Accotink W.R.
Fort Belvoir, VA
Placed 11 November, 2000
---
To enter the refuge, take Fort Belvoir's Tully Gate (open to civilians) from Route 1. The trailhead is located at the second parking lot on the right, the one with bathrooms.

This box is named after one of my favorite birds, a reclusive bird that I actually have never spotted in Accotink. Perhaps some day.

After finding the Jolly G-Man's Accotink Letterbox, make your way back to the stone bridge / walkway he uses as a landmark.

From the stone bridge, take the trail that leads uphill at roughly 120 degrees, ESE.

As you walk uphill and where the two trails meet, keep your eyes forward and spy four trees sharing a common trunk at 108 degrees. From this 4-in-1, go to a 2-in-1 at 145 degrees.

From there, travel in the direction of 87 degrees until you see a 3-in-1 framed by a 2-in-1, due south to your right. (30 April 2002, G-Man found VA Rail out in the open, uncovered at least 50 feet away from where I thought it should go. To make sure, I counted 45 steps at 87° to get to a 3-in-1, before taking the next clue. I was unsure of the 3-in-1 framed by the 2-in-1)

From this vantage point, five strides (two steps, left and right foot) at 132 degrees will do the trick to find the shortest guy around.
